In some cases, an artist may receive more than one nomination which factors into their official count. For example, Keith Urban received two nominations in the Album of the Year category—one each as artist and producer—because that category recognizes both.
Award recipients in each category are noted above parenthetically in the Album of the Year, Single Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Video of the Year and Vocal Event of the Year.

“Humble and Kind” beat out Keith Urban‘s “Blue Ain’t Your Color,” Thomas Rhett‘s “Die a Happy Man,” Maren Morris, “My Church” and Miranda Lambert‘s “Vice” for the honor.
The award goes to songwriters, and McKenna seemed almost stunned to have won during the pre-telecast portion of the awards show. Dressed in a simple black dress, she tearfully thanked McGraw for “creating a moment” out of her song, which she wrote to express her hopes for her own five children.

That wasn’t a random group of kids surrounding Tim McGraw as he sang “Humble and Kind” at the 2016 CMA Awards. The singer reveals that they were the students of Ben Ellis, a teacher who died in September after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Many of the young boys and girls who joined McGraw were among the group of 400 students who traveled to Ellis’ home to sing and pray with him in September, just days before he died. Ellis taught Latin and Bible studies at Christ Presbyterian Academy in Brentwood, Tenn. McGraw heard of his story through a friend and recognized his battle and life.
“The example of love and kindness that showed in his heart through his teaching has impacted so many of his students, and through them has and will continue to impact the world,” McGraw wrote after learning of his passing. “Time well spent Mr. Ellis, time well spent sir … rest now, for you shall be well received.”
McGraw started his 2016 CMA Awards performance alone, but by the end, the students surrounded him, holding candles. The CMA Song of the Year brought writer Lori McKenna to tears, and early on it was one of the 50th annual CMA Awards highlights. “Humble and Kind” is from McGraw’s Damn Country Music album.

Lori McKenna took home the Song of the Year award at the 50th annual CMA Awards for her song, “Humble and Kind,” performed by Tim McGraw.
McKenna originally wrote “Humble and Kind” for her five children. She is a longtime friend of McGraw and his wife Faith Hill, especially after Hill covered four of McKenna’s original songs on her 2005 album Fireflies. In addition to pulling McGraw onstage with her to accept the award, McKenna also thanked Hill in her speech, bringing the singer to tears from the audience.
“Oh good Lord, good Lord! I have a job in this town because of this guy’s wife — Faith Hill,” said McKenna with tears in her eyes. “And Tim [McGraw] took a little prayer that I wrote for five kids … I wrote them a little prayer one day, and he took it and made this moment of it, and I thank him so much.”
McKenna also won Song of the Year last year, for penning Little Big Town‘s hit “Girl Crush.”

Superstar entertainer Tim McGraw is having a year for the record books. Currently nominated for the Country Music Association’s Male Vocalist of the Year trophy and the American Music Award for Favorite Country Song, McGraw becomes the first artist to have three individual singles simultaneously sit in the Top 15 on Mediabase’s Country Airplay chart. The charted singles include McGraw’s “How I’ll Always Be” (No. 14) along with the Florida Georgia Line track featuring McGraw entitled “May We All” (No. 13) and the Big & Rich track featuring McGraw “Lovin’ Lately” (No. 10).
McGraw was the first to have three singles in the Top 20 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart in 2000 and is now the first to achieve this feat for the second time with “How I’ll Always Be,” “Lovin’ Lately,” and “May We All” spending their third consecutive week inside the Top 20.
Additionally, “Lovin’ Lately” and “May We All” become McGraw’s 59th and 60th career Top 10 hits.
No Country artist has released a more influential song during the past year than McGraw’s chart-topping, Platinum-selling “Humble And Kind” which has received praise from everyone including Oprah to top music critics alike. A multi-week #1 hit on the Country charts and a Top 10 hit on the AC charts, the Lori McKenna-penned ballad has been so widely praised by the Nashville music community that the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) awarded McKenna with their coveted “Song of the Year” award on Sunday, October 9 at the Music City Center where she accepted her honor and praised McGraw for “bringing the song to life.”
The music video for “Humble And Kind” has been viewed over 30 million times and won the top prize this summer at the annual CMT Music Awards. Those views, combined with a Clio Award-winning integrated marketing campaign, helped the song reach over one billion people since January. The song and video are currently final nominees for the 50th annual CMA Awards in the categories of Single of the Year, Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year.
Last week McGraw and his wife, superstar female vocalist Faith Hill, performed a surprise show at the historic Ryman Auditorium where they announced their highly anticipated SOUL2SOUL THE WORLD TOUR 2017. The North American run on the tour begins on April 7, 2017, in New Orleans and ends in Brooklyn in October.
The pair will also serve as the first duo Key Advisors on NBC’s The Voice beginning October 24.
